Start with the date, the count, and the drive
Three things narrow the field faster than anything else: roughly when you want to marry, roughly how many people, and how far your guests will realistically travel. A venue that's beautiful and holds 80 is not a candidate for your 140-person list, however much you love it.
What the rental fee actually includes
The headline number rarely means the same thing twice. Ask what's inside it: tables and chairs, or rented separately? Is there a kitchen a caterer can actually work in? How many hours, and what does overtime cost? Is there a required bar or catering package? An "expensive" all-inclusive venue is often cheaper than a "cheap" empty field once the rentals land.
Questions worth asking on the tour
What's the rain plan, and have you actually run it? What time does music have to stop? Where do vendors load in, and where does everyone park? What happens if it's 95 degrees? The answers tell you more about how a venue runs a day than any photo gallery will.
How far ahead should we book a wedding venue?
Most couples book 9–18 months out, and the venue is usually the first thing locked because everything else keys off the date. Peak Saturdays in popular markets go first; a Friday or an off-season date opens up far more choice.
What's usually included in a venue's rental fee?
It varies enormously. Some venues include tables, chairs, setup and a coordinator; others are a space and nothing else. Ask for the inclusion list in writing and price the gaps before you compare two venues' numbers.
How many venues should we tour?
Three to five is usually enough. Tour more than that and they blur together — take photos and notes at each, and revisit your top two before deciding.
What does "all-inclusive" actually mean?
Usually venue, catering, bar and rentals in one contract, sometimes with a coordinator. It's not automatically more expensive — it's fewer contracts and fewer surprises, but check what's genuinely included and where the upgrades start.
